What do you want to know about Tego Calderon?

Tego Calderon visits Latino 96.3
By: Albert Perez - Staff Writer

While promoting his new album and acting debut, Latin Hip- Hop icon Tego Calderon, took time from his hectic schedule and stopped by Latino 96.3.

During his visit he talked about his two upcoming projects, his third album, “El Abayarde Contraataca” and the film “Illegal Tender,”where he makes his acting debut.

He also answered some of the questions you submitted as part of our “What do you want to know about Tego Calderon” online promotion.

Despite coming into the studios early in the morning , Calderon was overly excited to talk about his upcoming album “El Abayarde Contraataca.”

“It’s an album full of variety, with a lot of different music. I am very proud of because it has several musical tendencies,” said Calderon.

The album conveys these musical tendencies through a blend of vivacious sounds that are influenced by African, Venezuelan, Colombian and Caribbean rhythms. Embedded in the album’s lyrics are the social themes and the untouchable bravado that he usually transmits through his artistic outlook.

“You get joy out of listening to it. Last night I went to sleep real late; I kept on listening to it over and over, because I like it so much,” said Calderon regarding his album.

Expanding his artistic prowess, Calderon traded reciting musical lyrics for reciting movie script lines, as he took to the big screen and made his acting debut with a supporting role in the recently released action-drama, “Illegal Tender.”

In the film, produced by famed director John Singleton, Calderon plays a smooth and slick gangster named Choco.

“He's a bad guy, but a good bad guy. He’s not too bad, he’s not like the character Tupac played in the movie Juice,” said Calderon about the nature of his character.

It seems as if the acting bug has left its mark on Calderon. He is set to work with Singleton again, only this time in a comedic film.

“I like acting so much; I’ am anxious to do it again. It’s something I see myself doing more of in the future. The reviews for my work have been good,” said Calderon.

With his career at full throttle at moment, it may seem strange that Calderon contemplated retirement from the entertainment industry a few years ago. Now, the artist sees retirement as a distant thought and relishes his spot in the world of music.

“I said that at a given time, but I am in love with what I do,” said Calderon.” I think people find importance in what I express and tell them. Honestly I don’t see myself leaving music.”

Calderon also took to time to thank his Los Angeles fan base. He is overwhelmed by the strong support he receives from the great amount of fans he has in the city of Angels.

“I am surprised by the support I have in Los Angeles, It’s a place that I thought I was never going to capture. I have found that I have a lot fans from different countries,” said Calderon.” That is something I thank my fans for. I am grateful for the love I get here; every time I have a concert here there is always a good turnout.”

“I never thought my music was going to be liked here in Los Angeles. When I began to make music, I only made it for Puerto Rico. It just expanded every where,” said Calderon.

Comments: When was the hardest time in your career that might have made you feel like quitting the business?

I never had one. I think that nothing can be more difficult than everything that I have lived through. I don’t think there is any situation can make me walk away from my music, unless it’s something involving my kids and my family.

Name: Lucia
City: los angeles

Comments: Why are you so humble?

I don’t know, it’s the only way I know how to be. To get by in life, I think every human being gets certain tools from their parents. My father was a humble man; he always got along with everyone. In jail I learned that with humility, even with the meanest people, one can dominate and prevail. And that’s what I have learned, that the most humble people always prevail.

Name: Donaji
City: studio
Comments: Would you take off your AFRO someday???

I have thought about it. When I was younger I had dreadlocks, which I liked having .I also had a shaved head when I was much younger. Sometimes I feel like taking it off, but I know my fans would miss it.
